Une grande partie des illustrations sonores est constituée d'enregistrements spécifiques qui permettent d'entendre de nombreux instruments souvent « perdus » dans les masses orchestrales. Ce deuxième volume du Guide des Instruments est réalisé suivant les mêmes principes que le premier. Le texte de Jérôme Lejeune est illustré par de nombreuses photos d'instruments et d'autres sources iconographiques, et un ensemble de 8 CDs illustre par le son toutes ces découvertes instrumentales, dans des programmes thématiques (L'orchestre de Berlioz, Musiques de Salon, Vienne au temps de Beethoven, Wagner et les innovations instrumentales, L'atelier de Sax...). Si une partie de ces illustrations sonores provient d'enregistrements existants du catalogue Harmonia Mundi, de ceux du groupe Outhere ou de licences obtenues auprès d'autres labels, une autre partie est le fruit d'enregistrements spécifiques. Ceux qui pensent que cette période n'a fait que développer les instruments de l'orchestre de Beethoven seront surpris de découvrir une quantité incroyable d'instruments dont la vie fut éphémère mais aussi tous ceux qui ont apporté des couleurs nouvelles à l'orchestre.
